Cover War: Virtuosity

Cover War is something I decided to start doing after seeing different covers for the same book. I realized that I liked some covers better than others. For example one book might have a different cover for its US and UK copies. I thought making this "Cover War" feature would be a fun way of showing the different covers and why I like one more than the other.

I probably won't have a Cover War for each book that has a different cover. This will most likely only be a sporadic post for "special" covers or books.

Today's Cover War is between the Hardcover and the Paperback version of Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez. The Hardcover is to the left and the Paperback is to the right.

It seems obvious to me, but the winner of this Cover War is the Hardcover. I like that it has brighter colors and more contrast in it. I also like that the title isn't in a fancy loopy font like the paperback. Plus, the model on the paperback looks to posed and her expression just seems...strange.

Cover War: Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Today's Cover War is between what I believe is the original US Hardcover and the final US Hardcover of Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. The cover that I think was the original US cover may just be the cover for a country other than the US, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! The original US Hardcover is to the left and the final US Hardcover is to the right.

Both covers actually do hold significance in the story, but there is a clear winner in my eyes. The winner of this Cover War is the final US Hardcover. I'll admit that the original does hold more significance than the final cover, but the final cover is so much more appealing.

Cover War: A Beautiful Dark

Today's Cover War is between the Hardcover and Kindle/ebook Edition of A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies. There's not much difference between the two. In fact the only real difference is the background cover, but I thought that was enough to warrant a Cover War. The Hardcover is to the left and the Kindle Edition is to the right.

Now like I said there's no real difference between the two besides the background color and the color of the type. However I still prefer one over the other. And with that being said, the winner of this Cover War is the Hardcover! I like that it has a dark background because it has more contrast with the white dress on the girl. And also i think it shows that there's a bit of a darker side to the book.

Cover War: Forgotten

Today's Cover War is between the Australian cover and the UK cover of Forgotten by Cat Patrick. The Australian cover is to the left and the UK cover is to the right.

I don't think either of these covers captures the story except in little ways, but you probably won't get them unless you've read the book. I don't understand why the girl in the Australian cover is sleeping in a field, but I think the swirly colors and her sleeping show the memory loss aspect of the book. In the UK cover I think the faded girl to the left represents London's past that she can't remember, and the more colorful right girl represents the future that she sees.

I started out really liking the Australian cover, but after seeing both side-by-side I think the winner of this Cover War is the UK cover. I like that a lot of the cover is faded except for the spot of color on the girl to the right. Both are eye catching, but the UK cover is much more appealing in my eyes.

Cover War: Starcrossed

Today's Cover War is between the US Hardcover and the UK Paperback of Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. The Hardcover is on the left and the paperback is on the right.

I'm surprised to say that they winner of this Cover War is the UK Paperback. I think it's a better visual of the story and I like that it has some bright colors to it. It took me a while to warm up to the Paperback cover, but after a while I really came to prefer it to the Hardcover. 

Cover War: Angel Burn

Today's Cover War is between the US and the UK cover of Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly (know as Angel in the UK). The UK cover is to the left and the US cover is to the right.

I'm a bit torn on this one. I think the US cover is a better depiction of Willow as far as her hair and what not, but I like how the UK has Willow's wings.

While the US cover is super gorgeous something about the UK cover appeals more to me, thus making it the winner of this war. I think it shows more of the story in it's cover and has brighter colors making it more eye catching.

Cover War: What Happened to Goodbye

Todays' Cover War is between the US Hardcover and the UK Paperback of What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. The US Hardcover will be to the left and the UK Paperback will be to the right.

I think both covers are very pretty and a good sense of the book, but the winner of of this Cover War has to be the UK Paperback. I like that it has a basketball and other little things that relate to the story. While the US Hardcover captures the story with the suitcase I think the UK Paperback captures it even better by having all the little details coming out of a suitcase.

Today's Cover War is between the UK Paperback and Australian Paperback cover of Mercy by Rebecca Lim. I would usually do a Cover War between an foreign cover and an American cover, but I really don't like Mercy's American cover at all. The UK Paperback is to the left and the Australian Paperback is to the right.

The winner of this Cover War is the UK Paperback cover! I don't think either cover really captures what the book's about, but I do like that they both have some color in them instead of being black or dark and melancholy. I think the UK Paperback seems almost graceful, and it's very eye catching!

Today's Cover War is between the original US cover and the new US cover of Die For Me by Amy Plum. The original cover is to the right and the new cover is to the left. 

I think the original cover relates more to the story as far as Kate being in the boat and wearing her blue dress, but the new cover gives more sense of where the story is and is much more eye catching. 

I have to say that the winner of this war is definitely the new US cover. I was never a big fan of the original cover, and the new one is so much more appealing in so many ways. It's not as dark and the colors are beautiful. I love the way the model is standing and the view of Paris. Also, I love that dress, even if it isn't blue (for those of you who have read the book, you know what I mean).
