Review: Firelight by Sophie Jordan

(summary from goodreads)

With her rare ability to breathe fire, Jacinda is special even among the draki—the descendants of dragons who can shift between human and dragon forms. But when Jacinda’s rebelliousness leads her family to flee into the human world, she struggles to adapt, even as her draki spirit fades. The one thing that revives it is Will, whose family hunts her kind. Jacinda can’t resist getting closer to him, even though she knows she’s risking not only her life but the draki’s most closely guarded secret.

Review: What interested me most in tis book was the originality of the concept. A draki was something new and intriguing that the reader gets to learn about more and more throughout the book.

The first few chapters were, in my opinion, the best in the book. They were exciting and action-y, and because they were the first chapters of the book, they provided a little mystery. Unfortunately, once Jacinda and her family left the pride everything fell a little short.

I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters and can't really remember anything great about them. The romance between Jacinda and Will was rushed and I still don't understand why they "love" each other.

This book is the first in a series so I'll cut it some slack. I always try and read to at least the second or third book in a series before I make a decision on the book or the author. But even if I didn't have that little policy I would definitely want to read the sequel because that ending was a bit of a cliffhanger.  And even though Will and Jacinda's relationship didn't really have any grounds it was still fun to read.

So although this may sound like a negative review I still enjoyed the book. The idea was wonderfully original and even if the characters weren't ideal they still have time in the sequel to blossom and possibly find a place in my heart.

I agree. I read the first few chapters and enjoyed them, but once Jacinda moves it started frustrating me. Jacinda annoyed me, her mother annoyed me, her relationship with Will annoyed me (I'm with you, why do they LOVE one another?)

But, yeah, I'll read the second one to give the author another chance and to find out what is going to happen after that major cliffhanger. I also hope the sequel has more Cassian, because he was the one character I really did like.
